Supreme Court Strikes Down DOMA, Dismisses Prop 8!

Today is a monumental day in human rights history! The Supreme Court has struck down DOMA (the Defense of Marriage Act), declaring the law unconstitutional and granting legally-married same-sex couples across the United States federal benefits. #SCOTUS also released their long-awaited decision on California's Prop 8 - which banned same-sex marriage in the state - dismissing the case on the grounds that the Proponents of Prop 8 didn't have the standing to defend the discriminatory legislation in court.

What does this mean? Marriage equality has now been restored in California, making it the 13th state with the freedom to marry. Same-sex couples who live in those thirteen states will now have their marriages federally recognized, affording them over 1,000 federal rights and benefits marriage normally provides heterosexual couples.
